One of the most exciting parts of pregnancy is trying to figure out if you’re having a girl or a boy. Typically, expecting parents can find out of the gender of their child by week 20 of pregnancy during the anatomy scan—or sometimes during a blood test around week 10 or week 12,

What are the chances im having a boy?

Is it a boy or a girl? The father’s family might provide a clue | Your Pregnancy Matters | UT Southwestern Medical Center How To Know Girl Or Boy In Pregnancy Everyone wonders: Is it a boy or a girl? The answer is in the genes, and the father’s family history. Is it a boy or a girl? That’s the most common question I hear during ultrasounds. Many couples want to know, And there are plenty of that patients reference when guessing the sex of their baby.

My general response is that it’s a 50/50 chance that a woman will have a boy or a girl. But that’s not exactly true – there’s actually a slight bias toward male births. The ratio of male to female births, called the sex ratio, is about, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). This means about 51% of deliveries result in a baby boy.

While the sex ratio can be distorted by populations that selectively value male over female births, there could be another explanation. Research suggests the slight natural skew of the sex ratio could be nature’s way of adjusting for higher death rates in males due to injuries, accidents, and war.

  • For example, in England around 1900, 50.8% of births were boys.
  • Following World Wars I and II, the rate of male births increased to 51.6%.
  • This may not seem like a big difference, but it resulted in 32 more boys than girls born for every thousand births.
  • Similar changes were seen in other European countries as well following these wars.

It seems like sex ratio shifts should be a random phenomenon. But from a medical standpoint, perhaps there’s a genetic explanation to changes in the numbers of boy and girl babies at different times in history. : Is it a boy or a girl? What makes a boy in pregnancy?

Every egg has an X sex chromosome; a sperm can have either an X or a Y sex chromosome. If the sperm that fertilizes an egg has an X chromosome, the baby is female; if it has a Y chromosome, the baby will be a boy.

Does a small bump mean a girl?

Your Bump Can’t Reveal: Baby’s Gender – It’s somehow become a well-entrenched theory: A high and pointed all-belly bump says you’re carrying a boy, whereas a wide, low, weight-goes-everywhere bump suggests a girl. So is it true? “Like any successful old wives’ tale about pregnancy, determining the baby’s gender based on how the mom is carrying probably came from a great-great-grandmother and was passed down the family tree,” says Sherry A.

  1. Ross, MD, an ob-gyn at Providence St.
  2. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California, and author of She-ology: The Definitive Guide to Women’s Intimate Health. Period.
  3. There are no truths to any of these old wives’ tales I’ve come across during my 25 years practicing as an ob-gyn.” If you’re sporting a cute little all-in-the-front basketball bump, you can likely thank your height, not baby-to-be’s gender.

Tall women have more up-and-down room between the pubic bone and top of abdomen than petite moms-to-be, which allows for pregnancy weight to distribute more evenly. “Because they tend to have a larger midsection, taller women tend to stick out less and show later than shorter women,” Ross says.

But if you’re on the short side, there’s a good chance you’ll carry low and around your middle. After all, there’s not a whole lot of other places for baby to grow. Another reason for wide bumps: If baby is sprawled out horizontally (otherwise known as a transverse lie). It’s a pretty standard position before 26 weeks, but by week 35 babies should generally be head-down in the ready position for birth.

What shape is your stomach when your having a boy?

– Belly shape is one of the more popular myths surrounding pregnancy and gender prediction. You may have heard that you’re carrying a boy if your belly is low. If it’s high, you’re supposedly carrying a girl. The myth further explains that boys are more independent and, therefore, are carried lower in the uterus.

  • Girls apparently need more protection, so they’re carried up higher.
  • These gender stereotypes aren’t the only wacky thing about this myth.
  • What’s even more wild is that you may have heard this myth in reverse depending on who’s telling it! The truth: How you carry your pregnancy — both the size and shape of your belly — has to do with a number of factors none of which indicate the sex of your baby.

If this is your first pregnancy or if you have strong abdominal muscles, you may carry your baby higher because the abdominal wall isn’t as stretched. On the other hand, if this isn’t your first child, your abdominal wall may have stretched more and more with each pregnancy, making your bump fall a bit lower.

How do you plan a baby boy?

#3: The best time to conceive a baby boy after periods – This tip is believed to be one of the most important ones – which is the best day to conceive a baby boy after periods? Because male sperm is the faster of the two, Shettles suggests having intercourse as close to ovulation as possible, so the male y sperm can reach the egg first.

  • If you have sex several days before the day of ovulation, the less resilient male sperm may die off.
  • This leaves more female sperm to fertilize the ovum ( 5 ).
  • Not sure how to identify ovulation? It’s a good idea to start charting your monthly cycle and observing your cervical mucus.
  • When you notice egg-white cervical mucus, this is fertile mucus, and a good time to have intercourse.

Your chances of conceiving a boy are high around this time. Also, around ovulation time, you can use ovulation test kits (like pregnancy test kits) to give you added evidence that you’re ovulating. Check out our article on signs of ovulation,

Is it hard to get a baby boy?

Want to have a baby boy? Huggies shares tips on what you can do to improve your chances of conceiving a boy. How to conceive a boy? Some couples are almost desperate to conceive a baby of one particular gender, Whilst most couples are happy with either a boy or a girl baby, as long as, it is healthy and strong, some are keen to try to sway the odds of having a boy, if they can.

  1. Just remember that There are no guarantee and the odds of conceiving a boy or conceiving a girl are almost exactly the same for each and every pregnancy.
  2. No matter what claims are made by companies asserting their skills in predicting whether a boy or girl will be conceived, don’t be too trusting.
  3. A lot of time, money, trust and energy can be wasted by couples who think they can consciously influence their baby’s gender.

It’s worth remembering that the only scientifically proven strategy which can sway the odds, just slightly, is the timing of intercourse. Diet, lunar calendars, sexual positions and even the boy/girl patterning within families do not change the likelihood of gender determination.

Time sex to coincide with the day of ovulation (no earlier than 24 hours before you are about to ovulate). Deep penetrative sex is preferable. It helps if the woman orgasms. Have an energy drink, a cup of coffee or some chocolate before having sex. Get your partner to trade in the briefs for some boxer shorts.

What’s a fact and what’s a fallacy?

Fact – men influence the gender of the baby, not women. Men provide the sperm which either has an X (girl) or Y (boy) linked sex chromosome. There is no sure-fire guarantee of having a baby of a particular gender. Hoping and trying for a boy or girl is just that and does not influence the odds in either direction. One testicle does not produce girl sperm and the other boy sperm. Both produce an equal number of X and Y sperm and it is random chance, rather than management, which one fertilises the egg. Some men do seem to produce better quality X or Y sperm which may account for the reason why particular families have large numbers of girls or boys. Herbal and complementary medicine remedies do not impact on the likelihood of having a girl or a boy. They tend to offer spurious claims which are not based on scientific fact and reason.

Can’t I choose which sex my baby is?

Characteristics of boy sperm What this means to you
Are identified as looking like a Y Nothing really, just an interesting point.
Are not as resilient or strong as girl sperm. Interesting but nothing more.
Have short bursts of power before they fizzle out in energy. This affects the timing of sex to coincide with ovulation; don’t expect them to hang around.
Are not capable of fertilising the egg past 24 hours after they have left the man’s body. Timing sex to coincide with the day of ovulation may help slightly to increase the odds of having a boy.
Move at high speed towards the egg. Interesting but out of your control.

table>

Characteristics of girl sperm What this means to you Are identified as looking like an X. Interesting – some people remember the differences because they claim that the extra arm on the x indicates more strength. Are more resilient and live for longer than Y sperm. This means they can still fertilise the egg 4-5 days after they have left the man’s body. You don’t need to be so particular about timing sex to coincide with ovulation. Female sperm can wait around for longer until the egg is ready to be fertilised. Require less ‘nurturing’ to find their way to the egg. Interesting, but you don’t need to do anything consciously to look after them. Just don’t douche. Move more slowly than Y sperm but retain their energy. Again, you don’t need to do anything in particular.

Timing of intercourse The timing of when a couple has sex is thought to actually make a difference in helping to conceive with a boy. It is one of the strategies suggested in The Shettles Method, which claims that the chances of having a boy are boosted when conception occurs as close to ovulation as possible.

Boy or Y sperm are not as resilient as the X or female sperm. According to Shettles, it may help to provide a bit of additional support in supporting the Y sperm to get to their destination and not have to compete any more than they absolutely have to. Of course, this all depends on the willingness of a couple to track the woman’s ovulation and be available to each other over those crucial fertile hours.

According to Shettles, if you want a boy then avoid having sex:

no earlier than 24 hours before you are about to “ovulate”/conception/ovulation. not after 12 hours since you have ovulated.

Shettles also advises that if couples want to conceive with a boy:

Best position : deep penetrative sex is preferable. This helps to deposit the semen and sperm closest to the woman’s cervix so they are given the best opportunity to get to the egg in the fallopian tube. Twelve hours before ovulation is thought to maximise the chances of conceiving with a boy. It also helps if the woman orgasms. This boosts the alkaline properties of the vagina which again, supports the sperm to do their work. Orgasm also causes uterine and vaginal contractions which help to push the sperm upwards where they need to go.

How do I know when I’ve ovulated?

Many women develop a distinctive pain on one side of their lower pelvis, which occurs mid-way through their monthly cycle. Changes in the cervical mucous. Fertile mucous is clear, watery and stretchy – it appears similar to egg white. The cells change to encourage the smooth passage of sperm upwards through the cervix towards the fallopian tubes. Fertile mucous is also less acidic than non-fertile mucous and this environment favours the sperm rather than killing them off. You could try using an ovulation testing kit. These detect hormonal changes which occur at ovulation, particularly an increase in Luteinizing Hormone. But there is still some disagreement over their effectiveness. You may feel different. Women who have ovulated and are at their most fertile often experience and increase in their libido, they appear more attractive and are more relaxed. An increase in your basal body temperature. This is the lowest temperature which is attained by your body during rest and sleep. Just before ovulation occurs there is a rise in the temperature by a couple of degrees. If you are trying to conceive a boy, then it can be useful to chart your basal body temperature for a few months, so you know your peak times of fertility,

General tips to help conceive a boy

Caffeine may help to give the Y laden sperm an additional boost. An energy drink, cup of coffee or even some chocolate before having sex won’t do any harm. Suggest your partner change his underpants preference if he’s into the tighter briefs. Boxer shorts may look less glamorous but they don’t ‘hug’ the testicles close to the body and cause them to overheat. This in turn, can reduce the number of sperms which are produced and in turn, the likelihood of conceiving with a boy.

What about the food I’m eating? It does seem that male sperm prefer an alkaline vaginal environment, which is where the correlation between diet and gender selection comes in. Whether or not eating a less acidic diet makes a difference is still open to debate. But it probably does no harm. If you want to conceive a baby boy then you may want to consider eating less of these types of foods:

Spicy foods which contain vinegar, citrus juices and fruits and tart/tangy flavours. Avoid eating dairy foods such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice-cream. Eat more foods which contain potassium such as bananas, broccoli, potatoes, spinach and brussels sprouts. Some researchers believe that taking a daily supplement of Evening Primrose Oil boosts the chances of conceiving a boy.

Try eating more of these foods:

Bread, avocado, almonds, sprouts and wheatgrass. Pine nuts and cherries.

That’s interesting to know as I was thinking is it 50/50 or do u have higher chance of another gender depending on which you conceived last time Hi I already have a little girl. Was wondering what the odds are to conceive a boy second time? My 2 year old daughter was due may 7th, am now pregnant with a boy thats due 15th of june.i dont think it matters what time you conceive, like someone else said its 50/50 xx There is a theory about male sperm being quicker than girl sperm. The theory goes that if you have sex the day you ovulate then you will have a boy as they get there quickly and if you have sex 3 or 4 days before you will have a girl as they get there a few days later.I have no idea how true it is, I saw a woman who’s husband had no girls born into the family for 200 years and she had 3 boys but used the theory to have a girl. I have a 5 yr old boy and I’m currently due on the 4/7 and it’s another boy! Just like pp said it’s like tossing a coin! 😊x Our week-by-week PREGNANCY emails are a must for parents-to-be Every baby is a new pregnancy and previous pregnancies have no bearing on the sex of a new pregnancy. It is a 50-50 chance each time. As previous poster said its like flipping a coin. It’s down to when you had sex & positions can apparently affect this too. Boy sperm is faster but dies quicker, so it needs to be very close to the egg being released. Girls are slower but live longer. Im pregnant with my 3rd boy.
